Spiro appoints former Indofast CEO as group CEO after $215m funding
Africa's largest electric mobility startup Spiro has appointed Anant Badjatya, former Indofast Energy chief executive, as its new group CEO following a $215 million equity raise. Kaushik Burman, previous CEO, will now lead mobility services managing electric vehicle deployment and battery subscription programs.
The funding marks one of Africa's largest electric mobility investments and will support expansion of Spiro's battery-swapping network, manufacturing operations and energy infrastructure across the continent. Badjatya joins with experience overseeing 1,800+ battery-swapping stations serving 90,000 vehicles daily at Indofast Energy, a joint venture between IndianOil and SUN Mobility.
Spiro operates in seven African markets including Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda, with over 100,000 electric motorcycles deployed and 2,500+ battery-swapping stations. The leadership restructuring creates clearer separation between rider-facing transport business and broader ambitions in energy infrastructure and vehicle manufacturing.
With Africa seen as "the most exciting frontier for electric mobility," how might this leadership shake-up accelerate Spiro's expansion in your market, and what opportunities does it create for local electric mobility entrepreneurs?
