SSANU gives FG 14-day ultimatum to pay arrears or face indefinite strike
SSANU has given the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to clear all outstanding arrears owed to university staff under the 2026 agreement or face an indefinite nationwide strike starting immediately after the deadline. The ultimatum was issued today, October 6, 2026, by SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim during a press briefing in Abuja, following resolutions from the union's National Executive Council meeting held at the Federal University, Uyo in Akwa Ibom State over the weekend.
Ibrahim stated that while the 2026 agreement outlined clear terms for resolving arrears, payments have been implemented unevenly and haphazardly across federal universities, with some institutions receiving funds while others remain unpaid. He emphasized that the union will no longer accept delays, selective implementation, or attempts to undermine the agreement's financial and non-financial provisions, noting that earlier warnings issued last Thursday have been ignored.
The directive mandates all SSANU branches and zones to actively monitor agreement implementation at their respective universities, maintain precise membership records, document any instances of non-compliance or victimization against members, and promptly report findings to the National Secretariat. This follows the pattern of previous SSANU actions where unresolved implementation issues have led to prolonged strike actions affecting academic activities.
With the 14-day clock starting today, university communities nationwide should prepare for potential disruptions to lectures, examinations, and administrative services if the arrears remain unpaid by October 20, 2026. Staff are advised to stay updated through official branch channels, while students and parents should monitor institutional communications for contingency plans.
Will you be directly impacted by a possible university strike - as staff awaiting payment, student facing academic delays, or parent concerned about disrupted schedules - and what contingency measures have you considered?
