Starlink has introduced a 6-month instalment payment option for its mini kits in Kenya, cutting the upfront cost barrier for new users. Under the new plan, customers pay KES 6,750 ($52.8) upfront, plus KES 16,250 ($125.8) activation fee and KES 3,010 ($23.3) shipping. The remaining KES 27,000 ($209.1) kit cost is spread as KES 4,500 ($34.8) monthly for six months, added to the standard KES 6,500 ($50.3) residential subscription. This move targets price-sensitive users in rural and underserved areas where full upfront payment has slowed uptake. The mini kit, launched in September 2024 as a cheaper alternative to the standard KES 49,900 ($386) kit, helped Starlink reach 0.8% market share. However, growth stalled after November 2024 when capacity issues halted new sign-ups in Nairobi and Mombasa until June 2025, dropping active subscriptions to 17,066 by March 2025. Safaricom and Airtel seized the opportunity with sub-KES 3,000 5G routers, intensifying competition in Kenya's fixed internet market where Safaricom leads with 35.6% share. Will the instalment plan help Starlink regain momentum in rural areas, or will local telcos' cheaper 5G offers dominate the price-sensitive segment?
