Sudan’s representative to the UN, Ambassador Al-Harith Idriss Mohamed, accused the United Arab Emirates of worsening the Sudanese war by backing the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Speaking at the 81st UN General Assembly session on September 30, 2026, Idriss said the UAE’s claim of neutrality is false, describing it as a “bloodied partnership” with the RSF, which he said is committing crimes and atrocities. He alleged the UAE is spearheading a global campaign against the Sudanese Armed Forces, extending beyond arms procurement to active measures aimed at subverting the government and destabilising the region, including targeting water, power, energy networks, dams and food warehouses, and stoking sectarian tensions.

The RSF, established in 2013 by former President Omar al-Bashir, has about 100,000 fighters and is led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti). Both the RSF and senior SAF figures are under sanctions imposed by the United States and the United Kingdom. Idriss urged the UAE to reform its political system and become true representatives of the Emirati people, rather than a familial regime headed by military officials.

For Nigerians, the accusation highlights potential strain in Nigeria-UAE relations, which encompass significant trade, investment, and a large diaspora community working in the Gulf. Any diplomatic fallout could affect flight routes, remittance flows, and business partnerships, while regional instability may influence oil prices and migration patterns.

Nigerians should monitor official statements from Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UAE embassy in Abuja, check travel advisories for updates, and consider alternative remittance channels if needed. Will you adjust your business or travel plans based on how Nigeria-UAE relations evolve?
