Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has embraced Islam after reciting the Shahadah in Doha, Qatar, according to a report by Nana Ismail published September 24, 2026. The 33‑year‑old defender, who currently plays for Al‑Ahli in the Qatar Stars League, was shown in a video shared by Islamic scholar Dr Muhammad Salah on his verified Facebook page reciting the testimonies of faith. Troost‑Ekong began his Arabian‑peninsula career in 2024 with Saudi club Al‑Khaleej before joining Al‑Ahli in January 2026 on an 18‑month contract, making 14 appearances across all competitions, including one this season.

Internationally, he represented Nigeria from 2015 to 2025, earning 83 caps and scoring eight goals. He was a key member of the Super Eagles squad that reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where he was named the tournament’s best player, and he also featured at the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games.

His conversion highlights the growing presence of Muslim athletes in top‑level football and may influence how fans perceive his personal and professional choices moving forward. Will his faith inspire greater inclusivity in Nigerian sports, or will it shift focus from his on‑field achievements to his off‑field beliefs?
