Washington Spirit have locked down Super Falcons midfielder Deborah Abiodun on a new two-year contract running through 2028, with a mutual option for an additional year. The 22-year-old defensive midfielder originally joined the NWSL side from Pittsburgh Panthers in January 2025 but spent most of her debut season on loan at USL Super League club Dallas Trinity FC.

Spirit recalled Abiodun on August 26, 2026, and she's since made 21 appearances for manager Adrián González's side, contributing one goal and one assist. She's currently sidelined recovering from an injury sustained on club duty.

The contract secures a key piece of Nigeria's midfield pipeline abroad—Abiodun was part of the Super Falcons squad at the 2023 Women's World Cup. Her development in the NWSL, widely considered the world's top women's league, strengthens the national team's depth ahead of future qualifiers and tournaments.

For Nigerian fans tracking homegrown talent abroad, Abiodun's progression from college standout to NWSL regular mirrors the path of predecessors like Asisat Oshoala and Rasheedat Ajibade. Her recovery timeline isn't specified, but Spirit's investment signals long-term faith in her defensive midfield profile.
