Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, to strengthen economic and political ties between the nations. The discussions included both restricted and expanded formats following an official ceremony at the Grand Kremlin Palace.

This year marks the 65th anniversary of Russia-Tanzania diplomatic relations. Putin described Hassan's visit as "a very positive sign," noting she chose Russia for her first official trip since her second inauguration. Trade between the nations grew by 20-25 percent in 2025 across energy, geological exploration, transport logistics, healthcare, and education sectors.

Hassan, accompanied by senior officials, stated she was in Moscow for dialogue on mutual partnership and sustainable development for Tanzanians. She thanked Russia for its support during African liberation in the 1960s. The visit is historic as Tanzania's first presidential visit to Russia since founding father Julius Nyerere in 1969.

The meeting occurs amid international criticism following Tanzania's disputed October 2025 elections where Hassan won 97% of the vote. The violent crackdown drew condemnation from UN human rights experts, Western countries, and the EU. The U.S. announced a review of its partnership with Tanzania, while activists petitioned the International Criminal Court to investigate President Hassan. Russia expects Tanzania's participation at the third Russia-Africa Summit in October.
