TCN announced a planned electricity outage affecting parts of Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Bauchi and Yobe states, as well as Gazaoua in the Niger Republic, due to maintenance at the Kumbotos 330 kilovolt transmission substation scheduled for Sunday, June 28, 2026. The outage will prevent Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), parts of Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) and Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) from taking power for distribution to customers in those areas.

The maintenance involves upgrading the substation by replacing existing 350mm² conductors with 800mm² conductors and upgrading the 330kV bus II jumpers, aimed at strengthening the transmission network and improving power reliability. Households, businesses and essential services in the affected states will experience power interruptions, potentially disrupting daily activities, commerce and essential services that rely on grid electricity.

Residents and businesses should prepare for the outage by arranging alternative power sources such as generators or inverters, charging essential devices ahead of time, and checking for updates from TCN and their respective distribution companies. The outage is part of ongoing network upgrades; once completed, it is expected to reduce frequent faults and improve supply stability in the region.
