TCN MD blames govt mistakes, incompetent leaders for Nigeria power crisis
Ex-TCN MD Usman Mohammed, in an August 3, 2026 interview on Oseni Rufai's Nevon Podcast published by Daily Post, said Nigeria's electricity instability persists because the government repeatedly makes mistakes and appoints incompetent people to manage the power sector, noting even former President Olusegun Obasanjo's good intentions hit a brick wall.
Nigeria's power generation remains stuck between 3,000 and 6,000 megawatts while serving about 250 million people, a situation that has persisted for over a decade since privatization, leaving households and businesses reliant on costly generators and hindering economic growth.
The expert urges thorough studies before reforms and appointing competent technocrats; citizens may consider investing in alternative energy solutions like solar inverters or advocating for transparent appointments in the power sector; keep an eye on policy announcements from the Ministry of Power and TCN for any reforms. He also warned that without addressing the root causes of poor planning and patronage, the country will continue to experience frequent blackouts despite any tariff adjustments.
