Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa Femi Fani-Kayode confirmed three additional Nigerians were murdered in September: Kenechukwu Igwemmadu jumped to death escaping police harassment in Bloemfontein on Sept 18; Olaniyi Olatunde was shot by an unidentified attacker at a Pretoria club on Sept 20; Christian Nnaemeka was tortured to death by the Sizok’thola team led by politician Xolani Khumalo in Primrose on Sept 21. This brings the number of Nigerians killed in South Africa since January to at least 12.

The ambassador revealed that 112 Nigerians have been killed in South Africa since 2022, with 32 of those deaths attributed to South African security forces. Critically, he noted that 'not one person has been brought to justice or convicted for ANY of these crimes.' The Nigerian consulate described the recent killings as 'deeply troubling' and part of a pattern targeting Nigerians, linking Igwemmadu’s death to police brutality and Nnaemeka’s to a politicized vigilante group.

Given the ongoing harassment, lack of accountability, and specific threats from both state actors and civilian groups, what concrete safety measures should Nigerians currently in South Africa implement immediately? For those considering relocation or travel to South Africa, how does this documented pattern of violence with zero convictions alter your risk assessment?
