Tinubu approves 18-month tenure extensions for prison, immigration chiefs
President Bola Tinubu has approved 18‑month tenure extensions for Sylvester Nwakuche, controller‑general of the Nigerian Correctional Service, and Kemi Nandap, comptroller‑general of the Nigeria Immigration Service. Following the approval, Nwakuche’s term now ends on 26 May 2028, while Nandap’s ends on 30 June 2028. The extensions came on the recommendation of Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji‑Ojo and aim to fill a succession gap, giving the respective boards time to appoint successors. Tinubu praised both chiefs for the reforms they have introduced in their agencies and urged them to consolidate those gains. Nwakuche was nominated for his post in December 2024 and confirmed by the Senate in March 2025. Nandap received her nomination on 21 February 2024 and Senate confirmation on 1 March 2024. The move ensures continuity in leadership of two key security and migration agencies amid ongoing efforts to improve prison standards and immigration controls. With the extensions in place, the correctional and immigration services can maintain policy direction while searches for permanent replacements proceed.
