Tinubu calls APC unity amid corruption allegations and political chaos
President Bola Tinubu addressed APC party members last week, urging unity ahead of primary elections nationwide. However, his call for peace occurs amid escalating political violence and allegations of massive corruption within the party. APC primaries are currently ongoing across all 36 states, with reports suggesting chaotic situations reminiscent of the Yoruba Àáràgbá tree that finds no comfort anywhere.
Allegations of N800 billion misappropriation meant for Tinubu's 2027 re-election campaign have reportedly caused factionalization among state governors. The sum of N100 billion is also alleged to develop wings monthly from the federation account, with N20 trillion reportedly missing. Opposition leader Nasir El-Rufai remains in detention, with ADC party leader Atiku Abubakar suggesting this is a deliberate political maneuver to weaken the opposition.
Professor Femi Otubanjo warns that Nigeria's political parties are merely instruments of power acquisition, not genuine democratic entities. As Peter Tosh might say, "It's coming close to payday"—meaning consequences (Àtubòtán in Yoruba culture) are inevitable for actions and inactions. With political violence intensifying and democratic institutions appearing compromised, Nigerians face critical questions about the future of multi-party democracy and whether current institutions can deliver meaningful change.
