Tinubu confirms D'Tigress players receive $100,000 reward each, officials $50,000

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has confirmed that each member of Nigeria's women's basketball team, D'Tigress, received the naira equivalent of $100,000, while each official got $50,000, fulfilling the cash reward promised after their recent success. Tinubu made the announcement on his X account, noting that the payments, along with previously allocated three-bedroom homes in Abuja and national honours, complete the athletes' reward package. He explained the delay was due to required legal and administrative processes, stressing that a promise made must be kept. Tinubu also said similar commitments to the Super Falcons and Super Eagles—house allocations and national honours—have been fulfilled, reiterating that athletes who bring honour to Nigeria deserve more than applause.

This development matters because it demonstrates the government's willingness to follow through on sports incentive promises, which can boost athlete morale and encourage future investment in sports development. The transparent fulfillment of such high-value rewards sets a benchmark for how Nigeria treats its sporting heroes and may influence upcoming budget allocations for sports programs. It also reassures citizens that presidential pledges, even those involving significant funds, can be honored when due process is followed.

What should you know or do? The rewards are now disbursed, and the administration indicates it will continue honoring similar pledges to other national teams. As a citizen, you can track whether future commitments are met with similar timeliness and consider how such incentives affect grassroots sports participation. With these rewards delivered, will this motivate more young Nigerians to pursue sports professionally, or do you think cash rewards alone are enough to sustain long-term athletic development?
