Tinubu declares economic foundation repaired, shifts focus to prosperity in Independence Day address
President Bola Tinubu marked Nigeria's 66th Independence Day by declaring the country's economic foundation repaired after difficult reforms, announcing a shift from crisis management to shared prosperity. Speaking on October 1, 2026, he cited over 4% economic growth this year, substantial inflation reduction, rebuilt foreign reserves, and record non-oil exports exceeding $6 billion in 2025 as evidence of progress.
The president outlined plans to lower living costs by reducing production and transportation expenses through mechanized farming expansion, improved seeds and fertilizer access, and completed roads, railways and ports connecting farms to markets. He emphasized job creation as central to prosperity, promising to use gas to power new industries, expand digital connectivity, and invest in skills employers demand.
Specific support programs highlighted include the Nigerian Education Loan Fund for low-income students, CREDICORP providing consumer credit for vehicles and solar systems, and strengthened National Social Register to better target poverty assistance. Tinubu claimed salaries and pensions have been paid on time since 2023 and noted pension reforms benefiting retirees.
While acknowledging many Nigerians still struggle today, he argued the country now has the foundation to defeat poverty through sustained growth and productive opportunities nationwide, urging citizens to build the future together rather than look back at past difficulties.
