President Bola Tinubu has pledged to donate his entire salary since taking office in May 2023 to a new welfare fund for Nigerian Armed Forces members and their families. He announced this personally on Sunday to mark his 74th birthday. The fund will specifically support soldiers wounded in action and the families of those who died in service.

The president directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to establish a dedicated account for this purpose, calling it a national duty rather than charity. He urged governors, legislators, the private sector, and all Nigerians to contribute, with account details to be released later. This follows his December 2025 launch of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day appeal, where he personally donated ₦200 million toward a ₦320 million target and unveiled a "Thank a Soldier" digital platform.

Tinubu opted for a low-key birthday celebration due to the nation's economic challenges and ongoing reforms. The initiative directly addresses welfare gaps for military personnel beyond existing insurance schemes, targeting amputees and bereaved families.

This move combines personal sacrifice with public appeal—will other leaders follow his lead, or is symbolic leadership enough when systemic military welfare reforms remain unimplemented?
