Tinubu explains NYSC reforms to equip youth for national development
President Bola Tinubu has explained that the recent reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) aim to equip young Nigerians with practical skills and prepare them for national development while preserving the scheme’s long‑standing role in fostering unity. Speaking on his verified X handle on Wednesday, Tinubu said the changes were approved by the Federal Executive Council on Monday and fulfil his campaign promise to create meaningful opportunities for youth and women. He noted that although the NYSC has promoted national unity for more than five decades, contemporary Nigeria demands a broader focus on skills and employability.
The reforms affect all prospective corps members, particularly young graduates and women, by reshaping the service year to include vocational training, entrepreneurship modules, and placements aligned with national development priorities. The government says the updated NYSC will better prepare participants for the job market and strengthen their contribution to sectors such as agriculture, technology, and infrastructure.
For prospective corps members, the changes mean a revised orientation course and placement process that emphasises skill acquisition. Details on the new curriculum and deployment guidelines are expected to be released by the NYSC Directorate soon, and applicants are advised to monitor the official NYSC website and their institution’s mobilization offices for updates.
