Tinubu grants NCS boss Bashir Adeniyi six‑month extension to Feb 2027
President Bola Tinubu has approved a six‑month tenure extension for Comptroller‑General of the Nigeria Customs Service Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, extending his term to February 2027. The extension was disclosed on June 19 by Presidential Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga, less than a year after a one‑year extension that was due to expire on August 31, 2025.
This move lets Adeniyi finish critical reforms, especially the National Single Window project that aims to digitise trade processes, speed cargo clearance and boost government revenue. It also ensures an orderly leadership transition within the Customs Service, affecting importers, exporters and broader trade facilitation efforts.
Adeniyi will work with the NCS Board to handle pending personnel matters, promote qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller and facilitate retirements of officers reaching 60 years or 35 years service. With over three decades in the Service, he previously oversaw the interception of $8.07 million in cash illegally moved through an airport. Businesses engaged in import/export should monitor Customs policy updates as the Single Window rollout continues and anticipate possible procedural changes during the handover period.
Will the extended tenure speed up the Single Window rollout enough to noticeably reduce your cargo clearance times, or should you prepare for possible delays during the handover?
