Tinubu honours 50 pro-democracy heroes with national awards on Democracy Day 2026
President Bola Tinubu has awarded national honours to 50 Nigerians for their roles in the pro‑democracy struggle that ended military rule, announcing the list on Friday as part of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration. Among the honourees are journalists Joe Igbokwe and Dele Alake, civil rights activists Dr Joe Okei‑Odumakin and Chief Ayo Opadokun, scholar Prof. Sylvester Odion‑Akhaine, and the late Dr Arthur Nwankwo, recognised posthumously. The list also includes a special “Soldier‑Democrats” category for military officers such as retired Major‑General Ishola Williams and Colonel Sambo Dasuki who opposed dictatorship.
Tinubu said June 12 occupies a sacred place in Nigeria’s memory, noting that many awardees suffered persecution, imprisonment and exile, and that their sacrifices secured the democratic freedoms Nigerians enjoy today. He added that the full honours list, including award categories and ranks, will be released in the coming days.
What does this recognition mean for Nigeria’s democratic memory and the civic duties of ordinary citizens today?
