President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered Nigeria's Independence Day address on October 1, 2026, declaring the era of difficult economic reforms over and shifting focus to shared and widespread prosperity. He noted that since 2023, reforms have yielded over 4% economic growth this year, reduced oil theft, substantially lowered inflation, rebuilt foreign reserves, stabilized the forex market, and achieved record non-oil exports exceeding $6 billion in 2025, verified by international observers.

Tinubu outlined plans to lower the cost of living by expanding mechanised irrigation and dry‑season farming, improving access to seeds and fertiliser, increasing mechanisation, and investing in storage and transportation infrastructure, including roads, railways and ports linking farms to markets. He said cheaper production and transport will translate into lower prices for goods.

To create productive work, the administration will use gas to power new industries, revive factories in industrial hubs, expand digital connectivity, invest in skills demanded by employers, and support businesses with finance and infrastructure. He highlighted CREDICORP’s consumer credit scheme for vehicles, solar systems and digital devices, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund for low‑income students, and strengthened direct support for the poorest households via an improved National Social Register.

While acknowledging that millions still struggle today due to decades of low productivity and inadequate infrastructure, Tinubu said poverty will be defeated through sustained growth and millions of productive opportunities, not merely managed more efficiently. He urged Nigerians to move forward together, building on the corrected economic foundation.

Consider how lower food costs, easier access to credit, or new job opportunities in your sector might affect your daily decisions and long‑term plans.
