Tinubu Says Nigeria Saved ₦61.58bn on Fertiliser, Secured 449k+ Tonnes Amid Global Shock
Tinubu revealed Nigeria saved ₦61.58 billion in 2026 through strategic fertiliser procurement under the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative (PFI), now restructured under MOFI, securing over 449,000 metric tonnes of inputs despite global supply chain disruptions from Middle East conflicts. As of May, 10 vessels carrying fertiliser materials had been discharged or were in transit.
This intervention shields farmers from global fertiliser price shocks that threaten farm productivity and food prices. Nigeria operates over 90 fertiliser blending plants—the largest capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa—and remains on track to deliver its 2026 target of 1.1 million metric tonnes (equivalent to 22 million bags) of fertiliser.
For the current planting season, the Renewed Hope Farm Input Support Programme (RH-FISP) through NADF is distributing 515,720 bags of locally produced fertiliser to 128,930 smallholder farmers across 25 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The programme includes digital extension services and application guidance for key crops like rice, maize, cassava and soybean.
With planting season underway, will this secured supply and support programme translate to better harvests and stable food prices for Nigerian households, or will global market pressures still require additional government intervention?
