Tinubu urges Team Nigeria to uphold integrity at 2026 Commonwealth Games
President Bola Tinubu, represented by Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, sent off Team Nigeria to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, urging athletes to prioritise integrity, discipline and patriotism while aiming for a historic medal haul. Speaking at the State House in Abuja, Tinubu warned that winning clean matters more than any medal, citing past challenges in Birmingham as a lesson for the current squad.
The president highlighted recent anti-doping reforms, including the signing of the Nigerian Anti-Doping Act and the inauguration of the Nigerian Anti-Doping Centre board, saying the goal is a sports system where success comes without suspicion. National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko praised the administration's "unprecedented" support, noting the Renewed Hope Initiative is positioning sports as a driver for national unity, youth development and economic growth. The NSC also unveiled global sportswear giant PUMA as the official kit partner for the 72-athlete contingent competing across ten sports disciplines. NSC Director General Bukola Olopade warned that any athlete or official found guilty of doping or indiscipline would face severe sanctions, including possible expulsion.
