Toilet tissue safe after urination, doctors warn against social media myths
Medical experts say using plain, unscented toilet tissue after urinating does not cause urinary tract infections or irritation, contrary to social media claims. Dr Yahya Mohammed of Abuja's National Hospital explained that real risks come from douching, scented feminine wipes, cleaning inside the vagina, wiping from back to front, harsh soaps, tight underwear and staying in wet underwear too long. Plain tissue is safe and may even help reduce moisture-related irritation; water washing is also recommended.
This matters because many Nigerian women have been misled by online myths, potentially adopting harmful habits that disrupt the vagina's natural balance and increase infection risk. Knowing what's truly risky versus myth helps protect intimate health without unnecessary expense or fear.
What hygiene habits will you keep or change to protect yourself—will you stick with plain tissue and water, or reconsider any risky practices picked up from social media?
