Tony Nwoye, representing Anambra North Senatorial District, was unanimously elected as Senate Minority Whip by the Senate minority caucus on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. The former Labour Party senator who defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in late 2025 replaces Senator Osita Ngwu, who defected from PDP to APC.

Peter Obi described Nwoye's appointment as "an elevation for more service to humanity," while Atiku Abubakar called it "a defining moment for the ADC and a bold step toward resetting Nigeria's governance trajectory." Both emphasized the need for principled leadership and unity across party lines.

This appointment signals ADC's growing influence in Nigerian Senate dynamics following recent party defections. With Nwoye now in a leadership position, the minority caucus gains increased leverage in legislative processes and could potentially reshape opposition strategies in the 2026 legislative session.
