Tragedy as 300-Level Medical Student Dies in Sleep
The OAU community was thrown into mourning earlier this month following the sudden and tragic death of a Part 3 student, Timilehin Toromade. Timilehin, a student of the Department of Medicine and Surgery in the College of Health Sciences, reportedly died in his sleep in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026. The news sent shockwaves through the campus, particularly within the medical student association.
According to the university's Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, the 18-year-old student is believed to have passed away sometime after 2:00 AM. One of his roommates had reportedly opened the door for another student around that time, suggesting Timilehin was still present in the room. He was later discovered unresponsive, leading to the devastating realization that he had passed away during his sleep.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Bamire, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as "deeply painful and distressing." In a condolence message, he lamented the loss of a young life filled with promise and the hope of healing others. The university management has assured the public that they are working with medical authorities to fully understand the circumstances of the death and urged the student populace to remain calm and prayerful during this difficult time.
