Twelve individuals have been sentenced to death by hanging for terrorism, kidnapping and related security offenses in convictions handed down by federal and state high courts between May and June 2026. Four men were found guilty of the June 5, 2022 attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State. Two others received death sentences from Ekiti State High Court for conspiracy to murder and kidnapping. Kogi State High Court sentenced one man for kidnapping that led to a killing, while Katsina State sentenced a woman for supplying ammunition to bandits. Three men were condemned in Sokoto State for terrorism, arms trafficking and related crimes, and another individual received a death sentence in mass terrorism trials held June 15‑18. Several additional defendants received prison terms ranging from two years to life. The Department of State Security said the cases involved Boko Haram, ISWAP, IPOB, gun running, terrorism financing and concealing information.

This wave of death sentences reflects a heightened judicial response to insurgent and criminal violence that has devastated communities across Nigeria’s North Central and Northwest regions. While intended to deter future attacks, the rulings raise questions about judicial fairness, the potential for wrongful convictions and whether punitive measures alone address the root causes of insecurity such as poverty, ideological recruitment and weak governance.

Residents should stay alert to security alerts in Ondo, Ekiti, Kogi, Katsina and Sokoto states, consider alternate travel routes if commuting through these areas, and support local vigilance or peace‑building initiatives. Because the sentences are subject to appeal, outcomes may change. Citizens may also reflect on whether harsh penalties improve safety or if investing in education, job creation and deradicalization programs offers a more lasting solution.
