Two Nigerians, Chijioke Odimegwu and Harafat Mogaji, have been sentenced to a combined 189 months (15 years) in a US federal prison for their roles in an international cyber intrusion and fraud scheme that stole over $2.4 million from American businesses. Odimegwu received nine years and was ordered to pay $366,000 in restitution, while Mogaji got six years and must pay $995. Both men, who lived and operated in Delaware and were members of the United States Air Force, used email spamming and phishing campaigns to steal usernames and passwords, then created spoofed email addresses mimicking victims or their business partners. They used these compromised accounts to redirect legitimate payments to bank accounts controlled by their co‑conspirators. The Department of Justice said they diverted more than $1.68 million from a victim in Iowa City to a Chicago account and over $720,000 from a victim in Ohio. After serving their prison terms, each will face three years of supervised release.

For Nigerians, especially those seeking work abroad or involved in online business, the case highlights how easily individuals can be drawn into transnational cybercrime networks, often under the guise of legitimate employment. It underscores the need to verify job offers, especially those promising quick money, and to safeguard personal credentials against phishing attempts.

What precautions would you take to ensure an overseas job offer is legitimate and not a front for fraudulent activity?
