What happened: On July 13, 2026, Nigerian national Nkemujika Uzorchuku, 36, was found dead in his apartment at Sanzirigu, a suburb of Tamale, Ghana, with a deep cut to his forehead and a towel forced into his mouth. Police say he shared the apartment with his wife, two fellow Nigerians—Daniel Victor Eze and David Oko Ewa—and another Nigerian, Godwin Nwafor. Investigators say the killing followed a dispute over proceeds from suspected internet fraud; the two suspects allegedly confessed to conspiring to kill him after he allegedly withheld money from their fraud proceeds. They were arrested in Tatale while attempting to flee through the Ghana-Togo border, and police recovered phones, laptops, jewelry, clothing and documents from the victim’s room.

Why it matters to Nigerians: The case highlights risks Nigerians abroad may face when involved in illicit internet fraud schemes, including violence among partners and legal jeopardy in foreign jurisdictions. It also underscores the need for caution when engaging in or associating with such activities, as disputes can turn violent and lead to prosecution abroad.

What you should know/do: If you or someone you know is involved in online fraud schemes, be aware that partnerships can turn violent and may result in criminal charges in the country where the crime occurs. Stay alert to security alerts from Nigerian missions abroad and consider legitimate livelihoods to avoid such risks. The suspects remain in Ghanaian police custody awaiting arraignment.
