Ubani Says Tinubu Legally Exempt from Submitting Primary School Certs for 2027 Election

Senior Advocate Monday Ubani stated on Eagle 102.5 FM today that President Bola Tinubu had no legal obligation to submit his primary and secondary school certificates to INEC for the 2027 presidential election. Citing Section 131 of the 1999 Constitution, Ubani argued the requirement is merely proof of education up to school certificate level, not physical production of certificates, noting judicial precedent supports this interpretation.

The clarification comes amid renewed controversy after former Senator Dino Melaye alleged Tinubu omitted these documents from his INEC submission. Ubani acknowledged transparency concerns, agreeing candidates "ordinarily" should show such evidence, but stressed it's a moral issue, not a legal compulsion. He also noted INEC acted within legal bounds by publishing candidates' documents without verification.

Ubani added that disputes over educational qualifications must be raised within 14 days of INEC's publication, and commented on Peter Obi's name discrepancies across documents, saying inconsistencies require explanation but aren't proof of wrongdoing without proper documentation.
