British Deputy High Commissioner in Nigeria, Gill Lever, confirmed Britain has no preferred candidate in Nigeria's upcoming 2027 general elections. Lever made this statement on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to Kwara State governor and Nigeria Governors' Forum Chairman, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, in Ilorin.

The envoy emphasized that the UK government would not interfere in Nigeria's electoral process, stressing that her country supports free, peaceful, and credible elections. "Downing Street has no favourite political party and will not be seen interfering in local political matters," Lever stated clearly.

The British official reiterated that while the UK won't tell Nigerians how to vote, peaceful and credible elections serve not only democratic objectives but also economic imperatives. "We all want to see elections that are peaceful, that are inclusive, that are credible, with space for participation, with respect for institutions," she added.

This declaration comes as Nigeria prepares for major elections next year, with international partners keen to ensure the process meets democratic standards.
