UK visa waiver for Botswana, Mauritius, Tunisia; Nigerians still need proof
The UK government has added Botswana, Mauritius, and Tunisia to the list of countries whose students can apply for a Student visa without having to submit proof of funds upfront under the differential evidence requirement. Nigerian students are not on this list, so they must still be ready to provide financial evidence if UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) asks for it during the application process.
Applicants who qualify for the exemption still need to meet the UK’s financial requirement; UKVI can request proof of maintenance funds at any stage. For those required to show funds, the maintenance amount is £1,529 per month for study in London (up to nine months) or £1,171 per month outside London, giving a maximum maintenance requirement of £13,761 in London or £10,539 outside London, excluding tuition fees. Students must also cover their course fees as stated on their Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
Nigerian students planning to study in the UK should ensure they have access to these amounts, keep bank statements or sponsorship letters ready, and consider applying for scholarships or financial aid to ease the burden. Those who have lived in the UK with a valid visa for at least 12 months before applying are exempt from the financial evidence requirement.
