UN human rights experts have accused Israel of violating a two-week truce by launching attacks on Beirut that killed over 350 people, including 30 children, and a later strike that killed at least 16 in Lebanon. The 19-member group, made up of special rapporteurs, called on UN member states to suspend arms transfers to Israel and demanded Israel halt military operations in Lebanon, withdraw forces, allow displaced persons to return, and engage in direct talks with Lebanon under UN Security Council Resolution 1701. They also urged the United States to use its influence to stop the strikes.

For Nigerians, the escalation raises concerns about regional stability that could affect global oil markets and the safety of the estimated 15,000 Nigerians living or working in Lebanon and neighboring countries. Nigeria’s recent votes at the UN on ceasefire resolutions may be tested as pressure grows for an arms embargo.

The experts’ statement follows a Pakistan-mediated ceasefire between the US and Iran that Israel says does not apply to Lebanon, a claim disputed by Pakistan. Israeli forces had previously issued evacuation warnings for southern Lebanese towns, including Tyre, telling residents to move north of the Zahrani River.

Will Nigeria join calls for an arms suspension on Israel, or continue to advocate for diplomatic solutions at the UN, and how might this affect its foreign policy balancing act between Western allies and solidarity with Palestinian and Lebanese causes?
