UN reports 1,932 killed in NE Nigeria Q2 2026 as aid access worsens despite fewer bombs
Between April and June 2026, 1,932 people were killed across Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states according to a UN OCHA report. While explosive ordnance incidents decreased 10.5% to 60 (from 67 in Q2 2025) and civilian casualties from bombs/IEDs fell 66.9% to 54 (from 163), humanitarian access worsened due to increased attacks on aid workers and military reprisals.
The report recorded specific attacks: a humanitarian supply truck looted near Gubio town on April 11, two NGO staff abducted in Monguno on June 24, and health partners suspending operations in Dapchi (Bursari LGA) after repeated attacks. Military operations in Sambisa Forest and Mandara Mountains contributed to fewer explosive incidents but triggered reprisals in civilian areas. Meanwhile, Nigeria's broader kidnapping crisis persisted with N2.57 billion paid to criminals between July 2024-June 2025.
Despite President Tinubu increasing police recruitment to 50,000 and designating kidnappers as terrorists, aid operations face dual pressures: reduced civilian movement due to insecurity and restricted access from bureaucratic hurdles and harsh weather.
