UN Warns Extreme Heat Endangers Pregnant Women, Newborns Worldwide
United Nations climate chief Simon Stiell will warn on Monday that extreme heat is putting pregnant mothers and their newborns at increasing risk worldwide. Speaking at the pre‑COP31 summit in Nadi, Fiji, Stiell will cite a survey of 1,000 midwives and doctors in the United Kingdom, Australia, India, Brazil and Zimbabwe commissioned by the Wellcome foundation, which found that more than two‑thirds of health professionals had seen heat‑related complications in pregnancy over the past five years. He said rising temperatures are linked to premature birth, stillbirth, low birth weight and maternal complications, describing pregnancy as a new faultline in the global climate crisis that could become fatal if unaddressed.
The warning comes as AFP analysis shows around 33 countries, from western Europe to the Sahel and Central America, recorded their hottest July since records began this year, underscoring how climate change is intensifying extreme weather events. Stiell urged leaders to act on the evidence and solutions already available, stressing that pregnancy should be a time of hope, not anxiety driven by climate impacts.
What steps should governments, health systems and communities take to protect pregnant women from extreme heat—such as improving access to cooling centres, adjusting work schedules, or strengthening maternal health programs—and how can individuals support those efforts in their own neighborhoods?
