UN warns renewed xenophobic violence threatens South Africa's stability

The United Nations has expressed grave concern over renewed xenophobic violence in South Africa, with Secretary-General António Guterres calling on authorities to protect foreign nationals and prevent further escalation. In a statement issued Monday, Guterres said he was 'deeply troubled' by reports of attacks targeting migrants and non-nationals, warning such incidents threaten social cohesion and the rule of law in Africa's most industrialised economy.

The UN noted reports of harassment, intimidation and violence in parts of South Africa, urging stronger enforcement mechanisms to deter perpetrators and rebuild trust in affected communities. In response, South African authorities have pledged to intensify efforts to curb violence, with security agencies increasing surveillance in identified hotspots. The UN also urged community leaders and civil society to promote tolerance and counter misinformation fueling anti-migrant sentiment, while calling for long-term policies addressing underlying economic and social pressures.
