UNICEF warns that insecurity and lack of play in Nigerian schools are damaging children's cognitive development and learning outcomes. Celine Lafoucriere, UNICEF Lagos Chief, reported today that children have been taken into captivity from schools in Borno, Niger, Kebbi, and Oyo states recently, with some still not returned home. She also noted overcrowded schools lacking space, time, and materials for play, plus fear keeping children away.

This matters because UNICEF states a child who cannot play will not reach their potential, and unsafe schools undermine learning. Lafoucriere emphasized that play builds brains through exploration and social interaction - something worksheets can't replace. LASUBEB Chairman Dr Hakeem Babatunde Shittu added that children learn better when happy and engaged through play, urging shared responsibility for child welfare among government, parents, and stakeholders.

The organization calls for immediate action to secure schools and restore play opportunities, warning that failing to act lets fear win. With children's educational attainment and long-term well-being at stake, the message is clear: safe schools and adequate play aren't luxuries but essentials for proper development.
