The United States and Iran have agreed to a Memorandum of Understanding to be signed on Friday, June 20, 2026, at the Burgenstock resort in Switzerland. The MOU calls for an end to US‑Iran hostilities and related fighting affecting allies such as Lebanon, while Iran pledges not to develop or acquire nuclear weapons and to keep its current nuclear program intact during further talks. In return, the United States will avoid new sanctions and military buildups, release frozen Iranian assets once the MOU takes effect, withdraw its forces from the region within 30 days, and grant temporary sanctions waivers that allow Iran to sell oil during negotiations. Iran also commits to ensuring free and safe commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz for 60 days, and Gulf states will coordinate on maritime arrangements.

For Nigeria, an oil‑exporting nation, the temporary waivers could increase Iranian oil supplies on the global market, potentially influencing Brent crude prices and thus local fuel costs and government revenue. The deal’s focus on Strait of Hormuz shipping also affects a key chokepoint for Nigerian crude exports.

What should you watch? Monitor global oil price movements over the coming weeks and consider how any price shifts might affect your household fuel budget or business operating costs.
