US Climber Breaks Everest Speed Record in Under 10 Hours
American Tyler Andrews set a new Mount Everest speed record, summiting the world's highest peak in just 9 hours and 55 minutes using supplementary oxygen on Thursday. The 36-year-old smashed the previous record of 10 hours and 56 minutes held by Nepali climber Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa since 2003.
Andrews, who is a cancer survivor, completed the solo climb with guides providing support during his ascent. He had attempted to break the 22-hour record for climbing without supplementary oxygen earlier in May but had to turn back.
The achievement requires formal verification by Nepal's mountain authorities. Andrews is using this climb to raise funds for youth athletes who lack access to coaching and equipment in Ecuador and Nepal.
More than 950 climbers have reached Everest's summit this season, with five deaths compared to 18 in 2023, the deadliest season on the mountain.
