U.S. forces conducting a combat search and rescue operation in southwestern Iran after an F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down at approximately 06:45 ET (11:45 BST) on Friday faced additional attacks. An A-10 Warthog supporting the mission was struck, forcing its pilot to eject over the Persian Gulf; the pilot was later successfully recovered. Separately, a rescue helicopter was hit by small arms fire, injuring crew members on board but allowing the aircraft to land safely. The wounded are receiving medical treatment.

The operation has so far recovered one of the two F-15E crew members. Efforts continue to locate and extract the second crew member from the area reportedly within or near Khuzestan Province. These incidents underscore the significant dangers of recovery missions in contested airspace during active conflict.

For Nigeria, this highlights escalating tensions in a region critical to global oil supply. While no direct Nigerian involvement is reported, prolonged conflict could disrupt oil markets, affecting fuel prices and government revenue. The events also reflect broader U.S.-Iran hostilities, influencing international diplomacy and regional security calculations. Nigerians with family in the Middle East or interests in oil-related sectors should monitor developments, as further escalation could impact global energy stability and Nigeria's economic planning.
