US Central Command launched self-defense strikes in southern Iran on Monday, May 26, 2026, targeting missile launch sites and Iranian boats attempting to place mines. According to CENTCOM spokesperson Capt. Tim Hawkins, the strikes were conducted in the area of Bandar Abbas, which hosts Iran's main naval base. 'US forces conducted self-defense strikes in southern Iran today to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces,' Hawkins stated. The strikes occurred during what CENTCOM described as an ongoing ceasefire, with the US claiming they will continue to defend their forces while exercising restraint. Bandar Abbas is strategically significant as it's near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments.
