The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Friday, June 19, 2026, in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day, the mission announced via its official X account on Thursday. Normal consular and diplomatic services—including visa appointments, passport applications, and other non-emergency operations—are expected to resume after the holiday.

Juneteenth, celebrated each June 19, marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved African Americans of their freedom, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It became a U.S. federal holiday in 2021, leading to annual closures of American government offices worldwide, including diplomatic missions.

For Nigerians with scheduled visa or passport appointments on Friday, the closure means those services will be unavailable; applicants should check the embassy’s website or contact the mission after June 19 for rescheduling. Emergency services for U.S. citizens remain accessible through the usual consular emergency lines.

Will you adjust your plans to apply before the holiday or wait until services resume next week?
