US imposes 4-year limit on F-1 student stays, effective Sept 15
Starting September 15, 2026, the US Department of Homeland Security replaces the 'duration of status' for F-1 students with fixed admission periods, capping most stays at four years. English language programme learners are limited to 24 months, while public high school students get 12 months, including breaks. The grace period after completing studies or authorised OPT is shortened, requiring students to leave sooner unless they obtain an extension.
This affects international students, including Nigerians, whose programmes may run longer than expected due to academic delays or changes in study. To stay longer, students must first consult their designated school official, obtain an updated Form I-20, then file Form I-539 with USCIS, pay the applicable fee and complete biometrics. Those with unexpired visas may also leave the US and seek a new admission upon return, based on updated SEVIS records.
Students should verify the end date on their I-20, apply for extension well before expiry, and note they can still enter the US up to 30 days before their programme starts. Failure to extend means departing the US earlier than before.
