US Intelligence Chief Tulsi Gabbard Resigns to Support Husband with Cancer
US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard resigned Friday to support her husband Abraham Williams diagnosed with bone cancer. The resignation takes effect June 30, making her the fourth Trump Cabinet member to depart the administration.
In her statement, Gabbard emphasized that her husband's illness requires her to step away from public service. "Abraham has been my rock throughout our eleven years of marriage," she said, adding she cannot "ask him to face this fight alone while I continue in this demanding, time-consuming position."
Gabbard had a rocky tenure, sidelined from major security decisions including military operations in Iran and Venezuela. Her relationship with CIA was strained, and she saw the agency's staff reduced by 50% under Trump's mandate. Unlike Trump's aggressive foreign policy approach, she advocated for restraints similar to Vice President JD Vance.
Principal deputy director Aaron Lukas will step in as acting director. Trump confirmed the departure on Truth Social, praising Gabbard's service and wishing her husband "soon better than ever."
What does this say about the stability of Trump's national security team compared to previous administrations?
