US-Iran peace deal slashes global oil prices to $79.50, promising relief for Nigerian fuel costs

Brent crude oil plunged nearly 4% to $79.50 per barrel at 9:54am Nigerian time Monday after Washington and Tehran announced a peace agreement ending over two months of hostilities. The deal also halted Israel-Iran conflict and paves the way for full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz—through which 20% of global oil supplies flow—after being closed since February 28.

During the crisis, Brent spiked above $100 per barrel, pushing Nigerian petrol prices from about N870 to approximately N1,350 per litre or higher in major cities. Dangote Refinery repeatedly adjusted its ex-depot prices to reflect the volatility, contributing to increased transportation fares and higher costs for food, goods and services nationwide.

With the Strait reopening and tensions eased, analysts expect global oil prices to moderate further in coming weeks. This could eventually translate into lower petrol prices at Nigerian pumps, reducing energy costs for consumers, transport operators and businesses still coping with elevated living expenses.

Will you adjust your budget or business plans anticipating potential fuel price relief, or wait to see if the price drop translates to tangible savings at the pump?
