US lifts 12‑year security restriction on Nigerian vessels, cuts shipping costs
The United States has lifted the 12‑year security restriction on Nigerian‑flagged vessels calling at American ports, a move announced in a letter dated 26 August from US Secretary of State for African Affairs Frank Garcia to Nigeria’s Minister of Marine and Blue Economy Adegboyega Oyetola. The removal ends the Condition of Entry (CoE) that, since 2014, required extra security checks for ships that had visited certain Nigerian ports in their previous five port stops. Garcia praised Nigeria’s sustained strengthening of port security and anti‑terrorism compliance, noting the change will reduce security‑related costs, improve turnaround times and increase schedule reliability for vessels trading between the two countries.
Oyetola said the development ends the 12‑year regime of enhanced requirements, positioning Nigerian ports to compete better for international shipping business. Shipping lines operating the Nigeria‑US route stand to benefit from lower security‑related expenses, fewer procedural burdens and more reliable schedules.
