US pledges an additional $267 million to support the Ebola response in the Democratic Republic of Congo, raising total American aid to $886 million. The announcement came on September 23, 2026, during the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, as the outbreak's death toll surpassed 3,700 across seven provinces.

The funding will support treatment units, safe burials, personal protective equipment, disease surveillance, medical supplies and contact tracing. Despite declines in Ituri and Haut-Uele, North Kivu saw a 73% rise in cases over the last three weeks, showing the outbreak remains uneven and dangerous. An unlicensed vaccine for the Bundibugyo strain means frontline workers receive the Ervebo shot experimentally while researchers race for a specific candidate. Beyond health, UNDP warns an uncontrolled spread could cost Africa $3.6 billion and jeopardize up to 328,000 jobs, with the DRC alone facing over $1 billion in lost output and 55,000 jobs at risk.

Given Nigeria's proximity and travel links, what steps should the country take to bolster surveillance at points of entry, prepare treatment capacity, and engage communities to prevent cross-border spread?
