Veteran Journalist Dotun Oladipo Dies at 56 After Sudden Illness at Office

Veteran journalist Dotun Oladipo, 56, died after suddenly falling ill at his office on Tuesday. Dotun was the publisher of Eagle Online, a former Politics Editor at PUNCH Newspapers, and held leadership roles as President of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society (IMPCMS) and Emeritus President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP). He was also a regular analyst on TVC’s Journalist Hangout programme.

The news of his passing was confirmed on Tuesday night by Danlami Nmodu, President of GOCOP, who posted on the guild’s WhatsApp platform: “It has just been confirmed that Emeritus President, Mr Dotun Oladipo, died today.” He added, “May his soul rest in peace. Amen.” On Wednesday morning, Nkanu Egbe, General Secretary of IMPCMS, announced the demise and described the news as “devastating,” noting that the Executive Committee would share details on funeral arrangements, condolence visits, and interim leadership as they become available.

Oladipo’s career spanned decades, with stints at the Nigerian Tribune and Nigerian Compass before his time at PUNCH. His contributions to online journalism and advocacy for press independence have left a lasting mark on the industry.
