Vice President Kashim Shettima has reiterated that his sole focus is on supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's bid for re-election in 2027, dismissing any notion that he is distracted by 2031 political ambitions. This clarification came shortly after the submission of their nomination forms to the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee, which formally secured the Tinubu-Shettima ticket for the 2027 general election. During the public presentation of former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon's autobiography, Shettima disclosed that individuals originating from his home state of Borno State had allegedly approached President Tinubu with accusations that he intended to poison him using clothing given as a gift by the Vice President, in an attempt to clear the path for Shettima to assume power prematurely. Shettima stated that President Tinubu dismissed these claims as baseless falsehoods and maintained a close, trusting working relationship with him, underscoring the mutual respect and loyalty that has characterized their partnership since the administration began in 2023. The Vice President urged Nigerians to disregard such divisive rumors and instead concentrate on holding the administration accountable for delivering on the promises made to the electorate for the current term, emphasizing that discussions about 2031 succession are premature and that leadership ultimately rests with God's will.

With the 2027 presidential ticket now settled, should Nigerians prioritize evaluating the government's performance on its 2023-2027 campaign promises over engaging in speculative discussions about the 2031 succession?
