VP Shettima in Luanda for AU summit on conflict prevention in Africa
Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in Luanda, Angola on August 29, 2026 to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government. The summit, themed "Strengthening Mechanisms for Conflict Prevention and Resolution in Africa," brings together African leaders to review existing peace mechanisms and consider practical responses to emerging security challenges.
Shettima was received by senior Angolan officials and a Nigerian delegation including Foreign Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Defence Minister Christopher Musa, Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Regional Development Minister Abubakar Momoh, Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi, and NiDCOM Chair Abike Dabiri-Erewa. Ahead of the leaders’ meeting, the 26th Extraordinary Session of the AU Executive Council held on August 28 prepared the ground for discussions.
The summit aims to strengthen early warning systems, preventive diplomacy, coordination among the AU, member states and Regional Economic Communities, and the role of the AU Peace and Security Council. It will also address sustainable African financing for peace and security, stronger responses to terrorism and violent extremism, and improvements to the African Peace and Security and Governance Architectures.
