VW to export 300,000 China-made cars yearly by 2030 amid job cuts
Back in October 2024, Volkswagen announced plans to export at least 300,000 vehicles annually from China by 2030, plus technology developed at its Hefei R&D centre. The German carmaker will ship China-developed electronic architecture (with Xpeng), platform and driver-assistance systems (with Horizon Robotics) to Asia, the Middle East and South America—not Europe for now.
This comes as VW battles fierce Chinese competition, weak demand, and a messy EV transition. The firm agreed with unions in September to cut 50,000 more jobs by 2030, bringing total planned reductions to around 100,000. Rival Mercedes-Benz also just issued a profit warning citing China difficulties.
For Nigerian drivers and dealers, this signals where the global auto industry is heading: China is becoming an export hub for technology and vehicles, not just a market. VW brands like Audi, Skoda, and Volkswagen itself are popular here—shifts in their global strategy could affect model availability, pricing, and service networks long-term.
Will the next VW you buy have Chinese-developed brains under the hood, and does that change your perception of German engineering?
