FIFA’s Global Football Development chief Arsène Wenger told the CAF Strategic Conference in Santa Maria, Cape Verde, that data proves an African team can win the World Cup. He pointed out that nine of the ten African sides at the 2026 World Cup made it out of the group stage, a marked improvement from past tournaments.

Wenger noted that while African teams previously lost due to loose formations, gaps between lines, and lapses in concentration, this year’s squads showed strong discipline and organisation. Still, he said, one more step is needed to turn that group‑stage success into a championship.

For Nigerian fans, the message is clear: African football is on an upward trajectory, and the gap to the sport’s biggest prize is narrowing. Continued investment in coaching, tactics, and player development could turn belief into reality.

Will you back the push for an African World Cup win by supporting local leagues, youth academies, and national teams, or wait to see if the data turns into silverware?
